SPIES gig Review

Whelan’s played host to SPIES’ homecoming gig. The band who just completed a tour around Russia has recently released their “Sea Creature” EP. In which received great reaction from critics alike. The bands sound, can be somewhat described as being alike to that of mixture of the Kings Of Leon, along with Bloc Party. With the vocals very reminiscent of Alex Trimble, Lead singer of Two Door Cinema Club they lead to an infectious listen.

The night began with O Sister taking the stage. O Sister’s sound can be attributed to the Harp and Synthesizer duo, combined with the bass and drums to make for some interesting musical combinations, the likes of which is seldom found around Dublin’s music scene. O Sister consisting of two female vocalists played a set along with Drums and Bass, that would remind you of the likes of such acts as Lorde, Cocteau Twins and Florence Welsh.

After O Sister completed their short set, it was only a small wait for the headline act to appear on stage.  At the stage, the crowd seemed to have doubled in size, almost making it a shoulder-to-shoulder event at some points. SPIES arrived on stage to an applauding crowd, the group opened up with some intentional feedback bleeding from the speakers dotted around the venue. The suspense of the introducing feedback set the tone for the gig, leading many of the crowd to ensure that they were in for a show. The band erupted into their opening number with force, showcasing that they are definitely not cardboard cutouts on stage with a wild range of different movements throughout each number, to which led to somewhat of a great reaction to the members of the audience.

The bands Vocalist, Michael Broderick seemed at home in front of the Whelan’s crowd. He showcased some great crowd interaction throughout the night, introducing many of the songs with some hilarity and giving members of the audience a shout out to some good reactions from the crowd.

At the mid point of the show, the crowd was seen to have been drawn in. With the introduction of one the groups songs “Night Games” grasping the remaining members of the audience. It seemed that every member of the crowd couldn’t resist the sounds of the group and finally gave into the temptation of movement with the music.  The Band showed of their newest EP’s potential to the many music fans in the crowd along with one or two record company executives who were also spotted amongst the crowd.

At the later stages of the gig it could be seen that the crowd was getting more and more into their performance. The crowd had seemed, by the time it took from the middle of the set to the latter part of the set, to stopped a mere shuffle to the songs but were now into a stage of full body movement along with the bands uplifted final songs.

A thunderous roar was heard upon the end of the final song, with a quick thank you to the crowd, the band made a quick exit off of the stage behind the curtains and into the green room below. Leaving the crowd in awe with a powerful showcase of their potential.

SPIES are due to be taking the stage again at this years Longitude Festival on the Sunday. If you want to see Irish talent, SPIES are your perfect opportunity to restore your faith in the Irish music scene.

Body & Soul’s Top 5 Must See acts

As summer approaches, festival season follows directly behind.  No festival can be matched as much for anticipation than this year’s Body and Soul which has been held annually for the past six years in the beautiful surroundings of Ballinlough Castle, Co.Westmeath.

The Music and arts festival is highly regarded by people who are eager to discover new music and celebrate the summer solstice, as well as celebrating the arts in all shapes and forms. The festival brings bands and acts to their multiple stages exposing to the crowds who gather to bask within the rich artistry of the festival. Here’s our Top 5 acts who are a must see at this year’s festival.

Savages:

London based post punk band ‘Savages’ are set to grace the stage this year. The band are on the way to setting the spark to reignite the post-punk scene, after releasing their debut album ‘Silence Yourself’ in 2013 they have been gaining headway with their debut track ‘’Husband’’ having been described by The Guardian, ‘’this is what it must have been like to have been around to hear, in real time, the debut releases by Siouxsie and the Banshees and Joy Division’’, The band have also been held in high regard for their live performances.

MMOTHS:

Hailing from Newbridge MMOTHS has garnered fans from far and wide since hitting the festival circuit during his leaving cert year a few years ago. Having had a quick rise to fame since his debut E.P with his tunes appearing in many ads he is now signed to lauded Los Angeles based record label, SQE Music.  His recent support of Aphex Twin is a serious stepping stone on his quest to becoming a household name.

King Kong Company:

This act has to be one of the best acts we’ve have heard in a while! King Kong Company have a varying style that can remind anybody of a crossbreed of Groove Armada/FatBoy Slim and the Gorillaz. The band’s live performances are notably quirky and are often seen in their stage dress of monkeys in suits (not monkey suits). KKC on stage presence is as energetic as the music they make. You cannot afford to miss this gig!

Talaboman:

The Duo composed of Swedish producer Axel Boman and Spanish Producer John Talabot, have made waves with the release of their House Hit ‘Sideral’ released in august of 2014, are due to blow the stage with their own branded house music, Talaboman’s debut track has an old school house feel mixed with the sounds that would be able to send any crowd into a frenzy.

Nightmares on wax:

The legend that is Nightmares on Wax is due to set all of the new-age electronic artists at this year’s festival straight with his unique style of producing, it’s been a long time since Nightmares on Wax’s debut release in 1991, and almost a year since his last release. Expect chilled crowds and a barrage of classics, such as Ethnic Majority and Ease Jimi from this legendary producer.

This is only the tip of the iceberg of the quality acts appearing at this year’s B&S with additional acts yet to be announced. What can you expect from this year’s instalment?    Good music, like-minded people, nice vibes and something for all ages.  Tickets are on sale now.

Darling: An Interview

Worthy of more than just one look, Dublin Rock duo Darling, formed from the ashes of The Kinetics, are due to take the stage of Whelan’s on the 1st of May, with the reputation gained over the past few years the band are set to make a gig to remember. Having completed their first headline gig of the year in The Sugar Club in Dublin’s city centre and being featured on RTE2’s the word and TG4 Ceol ar an Imeall, over the past two years. I caught up with Gary to see how the year has been musically, what their expectations are and what the future plan is.

How had the ending of the Kinetics affected you both in terms of continuing within a musical partnership? Would you say that it had a knock on effect on your willingness to form another musical project?

The ending of the group did, I mean, I kind of realised that by the end of that band that what I was really enjoying was writing music with James, so when the Kinetiks reached its conclusion, there was no real doubt in both our minds that we weren’t going to knock it on the head, we were both really keen to keep it going, Darling was always going to be just us writing songs together, that’s the main reason of the band existing, Song writing.

In terms of song writing is Darling, more musically free? Do you feel more able to express your true musical interests compared to when you were in your former group?

Yes, I’d think that’s fair to say, what you kind of develop as a writer is that you become less and less concerned with what is cool or current, we have our own sense of what we would think is a cool tune, as you progress as a writer you become less and less bogged down on what you should be writing, and just write what you feel like writing.

You have recently supported Echo and the Bunnymen and Embrace, how did you find the experience? Had supporting them encouraged your thirst for fame?

Yeah, I suppose, the Echo and the Bunnymen gig was exciting because it was the Olympia, we grew up going to gigs there and we were the only support act to a sold out show also Echo and The Bunnymen are a band I’d look up to hugely. The crowds were so good to perform to, there was no fans waiting to be impressed, they seemed to be real open to other bands, we got really good feedback from that gig alone, which was unbelievable. We felt really at home playing at the Olympia, it’s were we’d see ourselves. I’d also watch interviews with Ian Mc Culloch and listen to what he has to say about song writing, if we weren’t playing at the gig, I probably would have been at in the crowd.

Had either of the bands any words of encouragement for you as an upcoming act?

Well the Guitar player from Embrace actually got in touch with us after the gig and said he was really impressed, everybody really says the same thing, just work as hard as you can and don’t stop writing, it’s what we get told, time and time again, just don’t stop writing.

It’s Just One Look, your second E.P. gained the attention of Stephen Lipson, the man who the likes of Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Pet Shop Boys, entrusted their sound to, did it come as a major shock upon being called to London by Stephen to work with him?

You know sometimes you get these emails or phone calls that make you feel ten feet tall? Like being asked to support one of your favourite bands, or asked to go on a certain TV show, The Lipson thing was just one of those moments. It was hard work, and kind of terrifying, I mean it was intimidating because of the people he worked with before, the last time we were with him he was only back from working with Pharrell Williams and Johnny Marr, former guitar player of The Smiths. You kind of have to be on top of your game if your following the likes of Johnny Marr and Pharrell, Me, James and Stephen huddled around a desk working on the guitar parts and backing vocal ideas, just to make it the best that we can, you’ve got to go in, when you’re working with people like Stephen, on full cylinders, believing that the song your working on is the best song you’re going to hear for a good while.

Upon completing your first headline show of the year at the Sugar Club in January, and looking towards Whelan’s on the 1st of May, what can the public expect from you throughout the year?

Well we’re going to be working on our album actually, were going into the studio at the end of this month to start chipping away at the rest of it. We’re going to be on the Saturday night show with Brendan O Connor in April performing ‘Just One Look’, which is going to lead us nicely into the Whelan’s gig. Our track has also been track listed on FM104 for the month of April aswell, which means people should be hearing a lot more from us over the next couple of months, and we should be playing a couple of festivals over the summer aswell. The main focus for the year is the album, and recording the songs that we feel are going to make up the album, realistically, our album will be released next year, when we have given it enough time and effort.

Finally, are there any other upcoming Dublin acts that you like?

That’s a good question, and we get asked that a good bit, I suppose when it comes to Irish bands my head is in the sand a little, but, James Vincent McMorrow is someone we’d look up to, I really like that tune I heard by The Academic lately, Jape are someone we like and I hear All Twins are coming out with some really cool stuff, I think Ireland is producing some really good music at the moment, it’s a really exciting time to be part of the scene.

Darling, will be playing in Whelan’s on the 1st of May, tickets to the gig will be available on Ticketmaster from Friday 27th of March at 10am. The gig is strictly over 18’s and I.D will be required.

Top 10 Irish acts to see this Summer

Irish music has always only been associated with U2, Thin Lizzy and The Dubliners. But underneath our stereotype, we have a vibrant music scene, with tonnes of artists who are just to break into the mainstream. From Ska to Indie rock, from Acoustic Indie Pop to Garage Rock we have an irish artist to suit everybody’s taste; the following bands are ones to watch out for this summer.

King Kong Company,

The Waterford natives and their distinctive sound have swiftly become one of the most talked about live acts in the country. Two years ago, the group decided to play their first gig at a local venue; the crowd’s reaction encouraged them to explore their options as a touring band. Often being mistaken as a DJ group, rather than a seven piece band, they have a sound reminiscent of Groove Armada and on stage antics that can grab the focus of all members of the audience. With a much anticipated performance at this year’s Body & Soul festival in co. Westmeath, they are definitely a must see act.

Dott,

Galway Garage Pop act Dott, who recently have completed a couple of shows in America, are new contending act within the Irish music scene. The bands tracks from their E.P. Buttons, gives new light to the Garage pop/Indie Rock genre. The harmonised vocals, the hazy distorted guitar and feel good sound, could be the soundtrack to your summer. In due course the band has gained a following both here and in America, and is surely worth a listen.

Soak,

The young musician hailing from Derry has gained recognition at home and across the Irish Sea, after being shortlisted for BBC’s Sound of 2015. Setting her sights on music in 2011, Soak, has shown her talent with her songs ‘Sea Creatures’ and ‘B a noBody’ and is currently due to release her first album titled ‘Before We Forgot How to Dream’ on Rough Trade Records. The label that once held the Indie mega bands, The Smiths and The Strokes to name a few. Soaks album is one to watch out for, big things are being expected from the album, and I am sure not to be disappointed.

The Dodgy Few,

The Ska Band, who are regulars around Dublin’s music scene, are getting noticed by their fresh blend of Ska and Reggae by music lovers around the city. The band have had a quick rise through the scene almost appearing out of nowhere, hitting the ground running with a string of lively gigs around the city. They have a hectic touring schedule playing this year’s Body & Soul Festival, the Tramore ska festival, The Great Skinhead Reunion Festival in Brighton, and many more dates. The band released their debut single ‘The Wild Bunch’ in November of 2014, the way is cleared for the band to gain notoriety within the Irish music scene. The Dodgy Few are well worth the watch.

Walking On Cars,

A band with massive potential, Dingles own, Walking on Cars, have garnered a massive following from young to old with their rock/pop sound, the band who gained notoriety in 2012 after their song ‘Catch Me If You Can’ went straight to number one on the Irish iTunes. The band composed of five long time school friends took part in the Redbull Bedroom Jam competition in 2012 and subsequently won, giving the band the airplay that they needed.  The band released their second E.P.  Hand in Hand last year along with releasing the single ‘Always Be With You’. With the band due to release an album this year, and an extensive tour planned for the summer, You should Catch them, if you can.

Girl Band,

Girl Band has shed new light on the post punk, Alternative Rock genre. Hailing from Dublin the groups subsequent Debut E.P. France 98, released in 2012, has a style reminiscent of Queens of the Stone Age mixed in with a heavy Julian Casablanca vocal. Signed to Rough Trade Records along with fellow upcoming Irish Musician, Soak, the group have extensive gigging experience and are sure to put on a show. Girl Band are playing at this year’s Longitude Festival, before embarking on an American tour.

The Boxing Plot,

Formed in 2009, The Boxing Plot were one of the notable acts at last year’s Hard Working Class Heroes, after being around for more than six years, the band have only seemed to come out of their shell recently and have made a mark on Ireland’s Music Scene. The group’s tracks ‘Geist’ and ‘Heidecker’ gained serious airplay upon their release, with a baritone lead vocal and often jangling guitar riffs the band show everyone that there is real talent within the Irish music scene.

All Tvvins,

Ireland has produced some great bands over the years, but none amongst the likes of All Tvvins.  The Dublin based band, formed from the remnants of former groups Cast of Cheers and Adebesi  Shank , All Tvvins have served their time within the Indie Music scene. Having joined together, they have created a fresh aspect to Indie Rock, with only one song released as of yet, ‘Thank You’ shows the groups talent. With a more than distorted guitar over the mellow vocals, the track can restore the faith in any Indie Rock lovers music taste.

MeltyBrains?,

MeltyBrains? A five piece Experimental/Electronic Rock band based in Dublin, have an often differentiating sound, with multiple aspects of different genres thrown into almost every one of their tracks, makes for an enjoyable listen. Any opportunity to see Orla Gartland live should be taken.

An Interview With The Klares

Indie Rockers, The Klares are one of Ireland’s most promising bands, the groups rough approach to the Indie Rock genre has made for some great listening. The bands influences blatantly show through on their Dirty Bird E.P. which was released to great acclaim.

The group have gained unbelievable headway for such a young age, from playing infamous places around Dublin City, Including Workman’s Club and Whelan’s to playing at the Aviva stadium and making a trip to Los Angeles to perform at the You Bloom Festival. The group’s sound is what teenage life would sound like if it made a noise. With lyrics and vocals reminiscent of a young Alex Turner and an on stage presence, reminding us of an Oasis and The Jam fusion, the band show they are a live act rather than simple studio artists. I caught up with The Klares’, Andy, Eoin, Jordan and Cormac.

So, some background on the band when did you’s form?

About Two and a half years ago, we’re all in school together, we all met each other there

Upon seeing the group live back last year, I was really intrigued by the bands stage presence, Andy, who would you say you attribute your stage presence to?

Probably Ian Brown, from The Stone Roses, I probably took the dance from him

Your sound has been described as rough around the edges in a good way, who would you attribute your musical style to?

The Arctic Monkeys, and a bit of Oasis, our main influence would be the Arctic Monkeys though

Are there any acts around Dublin that you are fans of?

We’ve seen so many around lately, we like the Redwoods, they’re a band from Greystones, and the Raglans are pretty good as well. They’re not from Dublin, but The Strypes are doing pretty well, they’re good. The Eskies aswell, there are a few acts that we played with that are pretty good

Do you see any other Dublin act as your competition?

We’re set apart from everybody else.

Does that mean you are better than everybody else?

Well, we think so anyway, we hope so

After 2013’s Dirty Birds E.P. was released to great acclaim, when will we see another Klares Release?

Currently we’re working on our second E.P. at the moment, which should be coming out in a few weeks so, we’re in the studio on Saturday then finishing it off the following Saturday, we’re just waiting for our producer to get it all ready

What is your plan for the year ahead?

We’re sort of at early days with MCD, so we have a few gigs coming up with them, we’re playing at the independence festival this summer in Cork. We’re playing in the next week at the Button factory for converse, who are hosting a party there.

It’s looking like The Klares have a very hectic Schedule ahead of them this year, with a new E.P. a string of gigs, and a slot at this year’s independence festival in Cork.  The group definitely are one of my favourite Irish bands around at the moment, their ‘Dirty Birds E.P.’ is a must listen; click the link provided below to give it a listen.

Conor McGregor’s Top 10 Quotes

‘’The Notorious’’ Conor McGregor, has recently risen in popularity, becoming a cherished personality around Ireland and abroad. McGregor is known as one of the UFC’s greatest Featherweight fighters with a record of 17-2-0. Aside from McGregor’s fighting ability, the Crumlin native’s bark is just as formidable as his bite. Perhaps inevitably, this has led to some hilarious quotes from the man himself, and we thought we’d round up all of his best quotes!

‘’I keep having vivid dreams of success, then it’s time to sleep’’

‘’He’s a quiet, little hillbilly from the back arse of nowhere. His cousin is probably named Cletus.” – On Dustin Poirier

“He’s a midget, German steroid head.” – On UFC fighter, Denis Siever, who questioned McGregor’s UFC ranking.

“I will go over to Brazil and take out every man, woman and child to get that belt.” – On what he would do to secure the title from Jose Aldo.

Talking to Ryan Tubridy on his then upcoming fight with Cole Miller ‘’[He is] going to come in, approach, and try to make the fight ugly, but as you can see sitting here next to me Ryan, I’m just too damn pretty.’’

‘’Dustin Thinks it’s all talk, but when he wakes up with his nose plastered to the other side of his face, he’s gonna know it’s not’’ – On Dustin Poirer

“P Diddy is a little bit up his own ass to be honest.” / “P Diddy was on the bottom of the list of people I wanted to meet especially after finally meeting him.”

‘’At the end of the day you’ve got to feel some way. So why not feel unbeatable, why not feel untouchable?’’

‘’I didn’t have money before this. I was collecting 188 Euro a week off the social welfare. And now here I am, with like 60 G’s bonus and then my own pay. I don’t know what’s going on to be honest, right?”

“I stole the show, I stole everything. I’m gonna steal all the money from the UFC and high-tail it back to Ireland. F**k the recession.”

Locations around Dublin City featured In Once

Once is a classic heart-felt Film starring Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, and follows the story of a Dublin-based singer songwriter ‘Guy’, who meets a Czech flower seller ‘Girl’, played by Marketa Irglova, after she is drawn to him by his music.  Upon telling Guy that she is a musician also, they form a bond and inevitably love blossoms.  The movie was shot on a shoestring budget and filmed on the streets of Dublin. It really shows Dublin in its truest of forms, with multiple areas of the city being showcased, and the film brings a realistic aspect to its events with all of the scenes being filmed in business and public areas of the city. Here are some places you may recognise from the film!

Grafton Street, Dublin 2:

The City’s busiest shopping district was featured numerous time throughout the film. Grafton St is known not only for Bewley’s Café and its high-street clothes shops. The street is also home to much of Dublin’s busking musicians and artists, including the film’s Lead actor, Glen Hansard, who busked on Grafton Street  himself as an upcoming musician.

In the film, Guy finds himself (like most other musicians that busk on the street) battling over the tumultuous crowds that pass by in the hope of being overheard and earning some cash. It is on Grafton Street that Guy and Girl ultimately meet.

Waltons, 69 South Great George’s Street, Dublin 2:

The notorious music store and school of music has a special place in the heart of Dublin musicians, many of whom frequent the store and play the wide range of instruments within (Often very badly).

The store played host to Guy and Girl within the film, and in the most memorable scene Girl takes Guy to the store where she plays piano. She then accompanys Guy in a rendition of one of his songs (‘Falling Slowly’), which became a big hit following its nomination for an oscar. Walton’s have now banned anyone from playing ‘Falling Slowly’ in the shop because it’s played so often. If you do go in and start playing it, you’ll be kicked out so be warned!

St Stephens Green, Fusilier’s arch:

One of Dublin’s most visited places in Dublin, St Stephens Green was included in the 2006 film. The Victorian park within Dublin’s City centre is a well-known and loved spot for tourists and city goers alike. With a playground, luscious gardens, bandstands and more included it is almost inevitable that this park ended up in the film.

Guy is seen to give chase to a heroin addict who has stolen his day’s earnings from busking, who runs up Grafton Street and through the Fusiliers arch into the green, catching him just as he is through the park entrance.

Temple Bar Square:

In the Film the couple are seen strolling along the edge of the Square in Temple Bar after a successful night of recording, The Square, usually packed wall to wall with people, was shown in the early hours of the morning when only a small amount of people were present, showing the quieter side to the often bustling area thronged with bodies and filled with the cacophany of busking talent.

Georges St Arcade, South Great George’s St, Dublin 2:

The marketplace, one of Dublin’s oldest, also played host to the film. Guy and Girl are seen walking side by side, with Girl dragging the hoover that Guy is intending to fix, through the 121 year old arcade just before they have coffee in the Simons Place Coffee Shop right beside the well-known shopping area.

The arcade is known for its collections of different items that you may not find around Dublin with ease, from antiquities to fortune tellers, record shops to vintage clothing stores and piercings to book stores: the arcade is definitely worth a walk through!

Cream – “DisReally Good”

Okay okay, the headline is shocking but still you can not knock the fact of how influential Cream’s 1967 album “Disraeli Gears” was, having recently picked a vinyl copy of the album in Dublin’s city centre, I have come to realise the greatness of the album

Cream, formerly composed of Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, released the influential album back in the late 1960’s, with the help of poet Pete Brown, they set about lighting the way for future generations of rock n roll bands, Claptons new age Guitar playing, Bruce’s sharp Vocals and Baker’s masterful Drumming, sent me back to the sixties, the album is a trip within itself, the wah wah effect on Claptons guitar throughout and Bruce’s whining vocals send the mind into a confused state, reminiscent of a really fuzzy warm trip.

Recommend this album for any fan of music that can broaden your mind, or fans of Clapton, in which he really shows his Godlike status

Throwback, On a Wednesday???

Usually a “TBT” thing mostly but i just cant help but have this stuck in my head!

Major throwback to my sixteen year old self,

Bloc Party – Hunting for Witches,

Although, it was released when I was Twelve or so, It wasn’t until i was sixteen and found that there was a backlog of music that i was too snobbish to observe when it was released, and am i glad I found this Gem? Yes
